Enjoy the beach

In the Algarve you will find some of the best beaches in Europe, if not the world. Praia Grande, Armação de Pêra’s main beach, is a long stretch of fine sand backed by the town’s main avenue, with easy, step-free access — and, as the town still has an active fishing community, you will often see fishermen mending their nets along the sand.

To the west, the view reaches the coves and caves of Senhora da Rocha and Porches; to the east, the sand stretches towards Salgados, Galé and Albufeira — a protected stretch, famous among birdwatchers, where migratory birds rest in winter, flamingos in particular.

Explore Armação de Pêra

Armação de Pêra is a very typical, safe fishing town, facing one of the largest beaches in the Algarve — three kilometres of sand stretching to Salgados beach. And all around, the Algarve has plenty to offer: not just the sun and beautiful beaches, but also natural sites and landscapes, history, culture and attractions for the whole family.

One of the best things to do is a boat trip to see the caves: ocean erosion has carved a series of caves and arches along the coast — among them the famous Benagil cave.

Visit Nossa Senhora da Rocha

One of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the Algarve: orange cliffs contrasting with the turquoise blue and green tones of the ocean. Originally a fishing port, the beach is still shared with the fishermen’s boats and huts — and the fishermen also take tourists to visit the area’s caves and secluded beaches, reachable only from the sea.

A tunnel dug under the promontory leads to the neighbouring Praia Nova. Juniper, olive trees and wild mastic grow on the cliffs, where numerous birds take refuge — falcons, gulls and swifts.

Visit a church

You will have no trouble finding a beautiful church in the Algarve — some are genuine works of art. Silves Cathedral, begun in 1266 on the site of an old mosque, is Gothic, with a main altar rebuilt in Manueline style after the 1755 earthquake; Faro Cathedral (1577) holds a Mannerist altarpiece decorated with 17th-century sculptures; and Tavira has 21 churches — among them the 13th-century main church of Santa Maria do Castelo.

Next to Faro Cathedral, the Episcopal Palace (17th century) is decorated with a magnificent set of Baroque and Rococo tiles. And very close to Armação de Pêra is the Bone Chapel, in Largo do Ossário, Alcantarilha — 3.9 km away, a seven-minute drive.

Visit Algar Seco

In Carvoeiro, Algar Seco is considered one of the best viewpoints in Portugal: rocks and caves sculpted over hundreds of years by the sea and wind, natural pools of incredibly blue water and holes in the rock that look like windows and balconies. This is where you will find the famous “Boneca” — an inverted-cone rock that, seen from the sea, resembles a doll.

At the top of the cliffs, the Carvoeiro boardwalk offers a breathtaking view over the Atlantic and some of the most exotic beaches in Europe — well worth the walk.
